As well as the Butterflyfishes of the Chaetodon genus, the Chaetodontidae family contains several other genera including those of the Bannerfishes and Coralfishes. All-in-all there are approximately 129 species across 12 genera and many of these appear in the trade (not all of these genera are shown in the galleries below). The Chaetodon genus is the largest though with around 90 species indeed some authorities further divide these into several subgenera. Unfortunately none of these species can be classed as easy to keep or ‘reef-safe’ indeed many feed on sessile invertebrates by habit, some exclusively. They can also be quite delicate physically and therefore great care is required when selecting specimens for display.

Due to the high diversity of this family, each genus has it’s own sub-gallery that you can access by clicking or touching a thumbnail for more detail.
