The largest of the Butterflyfish genera, there are currently around 90 Chaetodon species. Some authorities further divide the genus into sub-genera and groups. These are some of the most colourful and beautiful of all marine fishes but great care and research is required to ensure any species planned for captivity can be maintained over the long term, as some are practically impossible to feed. Some species feed exclusively on coral polyps.
