Typically found in deeper water than their Chaetodon cousins, the Prognathodes genus currently contains 13 recognised species. Many of these originate from the Atlantic ocean. Unusual in the trade, these fish are notoriously tricky to collect and prone to damage if improperly handled. That said, they are regarded as quite hardy and able to adapt to captive life. Certain species command a very high price when offered due to their scarcity. They are not regarded to be completely “reef safe” and benefit from large, quiet, dimly-lit aquaria.
