Offering something of a change to those fancy fishes that are ‘all style and no substance’, the Jawfishes of the Opistoganthidae might be just the ticket if you are searching for an unusual centrepiece for your reef. OK, they aren’t exactly ‘lookers’ in the traditional sense, but what they lack in poise and form, they make up for with lovely colouration plus fascinating and sometimes mysterious habits. Truly there are few fish that are as interesting to observe in captivity as these oddball excavators who look like they’ve been transplanted direct from the bowels of the ocean with their ‘bug eyes’ and cavernous mouths.
