Pterios genus – Anyone who keeps up with conservation issues will know that these fish have rapidly become ‘public enemy number 1’, decimating ecosystems in areas where they have been ‘accidentally’ introduced. It’s got to the stage where prizes are awarded to divers for killing as many as possible and both sharks, and people, are being traineded to eat them as a desperate last ditch attempt to control their numbers. Such drastic measures are unquestionably justified given the circumstances but let’s remember that it is us humans, as is so often the case, who are ultimately responsible for the situation, not the fish themselves. With that in mind, Lionfishes are surely still worthy of admiration and study within our aquaria – perhaps even more so given their evident durability and predatory prowess.
